Raj Yoga in Kundli: Types, Formation & Results
On this page
A Raj Yoga (राज योग) is a planetary combination in a kundli that confers authority, status, success, and prosperity — the “royal” combinations of Vedic astrology. The most important form links the houses of power with the houses of fortune. But a Raj Yoga is a promise, and whether it delivers depends entirely on its strength and timing — which is what this guide explains.
How a Raj Yoga forms
The classic Raja Yoga arises from a relationship between a kendra (angular) house lord and a trikona (trine) house lord:
- Kendras: the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th — the pillars of power and action.
- Trikonas: the 1st, 5th, 9th — the houses of dharma and fortune.
When the lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona conjoin, aspect each other, or exchange signs (Parivartana), the energies of power and fortune fuse — the signature of rise and success. The 1st lord belongs to both groups, which is why it features in many Raj Yogas.
The main types
- Kendra–Trikona Raja Yoga — the foundational type above (e.g. 9th lord with 10th lord, or 5th lord with 4th lord).
- Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga — the union of the 9th lord (dharma) and 10th lord (karma); among the strongest, indicating rise through fortune and right action.
- Vipreet Raja Yoga — formed when the lords of the dusthanas (6th, 8th, 12th) occupy dusthanas; difficulty paradoxically converts into unexpected rise (“the fall of an enemy is your gain”).
- Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga — when a debilitated planet’s weakness is cancelled (see its own guide), the reversal itself can elevate the native. (Read: Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga.)
- Pancha Mahapurusha & Gajakesari — strength-based yogas that often accompany Raja Yogas (see Gajakesari Yoga).
Why the yoga alone isn’t enough
This is where casual readings go wrong. The presence of a Raj Yoga says little on its own; what matters is:
- Strength of the yoga-forming planets — their dignity (exaltation/own sign), house placement, and freedom from combustion.
- Cancellation (Bhanga) — a Raja Yoga can be negated by affliction, debilitation, or association with malefic dusthana lords.
- Dasha timing — the yoga fruits during the dasha or antardasha of the planets that form it. A powerful Raj Yoga whose dasha falls late in life (or not at all) delivers little until then.
A modest yoga with a strong, well-timed dasha can outperform a “great” yoga that never activates.

Acharya Jyotish detects 150+ classical yogas — including the full Raja-yoga family — and, crucially, evaluates each one’s strength and any Rajabhanga (cancellation) rather than just announcing its presence. It also shows which dasha brings the yoga forward, so you see when it operates.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Raj Yoga in a kundli?+
A Raj Yoga is a planetary combination that confers status, authority, success and prosperity. The classic form arises when a kendra (angle) lord and a trikona (trine) lord join, aspect, or exchange signs — linking power with fortune.
Does a Raj Yoga always make you a king or rich?+
No. A yoga is a promise, not a guarantee. Its results depend on the strength of the planets forming it, whether it's free of cancellation, and crucially whether its dasha (planetary period) operates in your lifetime.
What is Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga?+
It's one of the most powerful Raj Yogas — the union of the 9th lord (dharma/fortune) and the 10th lord (karma/career). When these two combine strongly, it indicates rise through right action and good fortune together.
