The Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas (पञ्च महापुरुष योग — “five great-person yogas”) are among the most celebrated combinations in Vedic astrology. Each marks a person of exceptional quality in some domain, and they form by a single elegant rule applied to the five non-luminary, non-nodal planets: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn.

The formation rule

A Mahapurusha Yoga forms when one of these five planets is both:

  1. In its own sign or its exaltation sign (i.e. in dignity), and
  2. Placed in a kendra — the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house — reckoned from the Lagna (and, in many traditions, also valid from the Moon).

When a planet is this strong and this prominently placed, it expresses its highest nature, shaping the whole personality. The Sun, Moon, Rahu, and Ketu are excluded — only the five “true” planets qualify.

The five yogas

Ruchaka Yoga — Mars

Formed by Mars in Aries, Scorpio (own), or Capricorn (exalted) in a kendra. Confers courage, leadership, physical strength, and a commanding, warrior-like nature — the soldier, athlete, or fearless commander.

Bhadra Yoga — Mercury

Formed by Mercury in Gemini or Virgo (own/exalted — Virgo is both) in a kendra. Confers sharp intellect, eloquence, business acumen, and youthfulness — the scholar, communicator, or shrewd entrepreneur.

Hamsa Yoga — Jupiter

Formed by Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces (own), or Cancer (exalted) in a kendra. Confers wisdom, righteousness, spirituality, and a respected, teacher-like character — the sage, guru, or principled leader. Often considered the most auspicious of the five.

Malavya Yoga — Venus

Formed by Venus in Taurus, Libra (own), or Pisces (exalted) in a kendra. Confers charm, beauty, artistic talent, luxury, and refined comforts — the artist, aesthete, or person of grace and pleasure.

Sasa Yoga — Saturn

Formed by Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius (own), or Libra (exalted) in a kendra. Confers discipline, authority, organisational power, and influence over masses — the administrator, leader, or self-made figure who rises through perseverance.

How strong is the yoga, really?

A named yoga in the chart is only a promise — its delivery depends on the details:

  • Affliction — aspects or conjunctions from malefics can dilute even a Mahapurusha Yoga.
  • The dispositor and the kendra’s strength — a strong, clean kendra delivers more.
  • The dasha — the yoga manifests most during the yoga-planet’s Mahadasha/Antardasha.
  • The rest of the chart — a single great yoga doesn’t override widespread weakness; astrology is synthesis.

This is why two people can both “have Hamsa Yoga” yet live very different lives — the yoga’s quality, not just its presence, is what counts.

Frequently asked questions

What is Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga?+

It is a set of five 'great person' yogas formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn occupies its own sign or exaltation sign AND sits in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna or Moon. Each planet gives its own named yoga.

What are the five Mahapurusha Yogas?+

Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Sasa (Saturn). Each confers the highest qualities of its planet — courage, intellect, wisdom, charm or discipline respectively.

How rare is a Mahapurusha Yoga?+

Reasonably common in principle — any planet exalted or in its own sign in a kendra qualifies — but a strong, unafflicted one that truly delivers is rarer. Affliction, debilitation of the dispositor, or a weak kendra can dilute the result.
