The 120-year cycle
Vimshottari assigns every planet a fixed span, totalling 120 years:

The Nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth decides which planet’s Mahadasha you are born into, and the Moon’s exact degree within it sets how much of that first period was already elapsed. From there the whole sequence follows.
Why three levels matter
A 19-year Saturn Mahadasha is far too broad to time an event. Each Mahadasha is divided into Antardasha sub-periods, and those into Pratyantardasha periods — and it is the interplay of these lords’ conditions in your chart that a Jyotishi reads to answer “when?”. What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?+
The Mahadasha is the major planetary period (for example a 19-year Saturn Mahadasha). Each Mahadasha is divided into Antardasha sub-periods ruled by all nine planets in turn, and those into still finer Pratyantardasha periods. Reading them together is how Jyotish times events.
