Ketu in Astrology: Significations, Effects & Remedies

Ketu (केतु) is the south lunar node — the point opposite Rahu where the Moon’s path crosses the ecliptic. Like Rahu it is a shadow planet (chhaya graha) with no physical body, but its nature is the mirror image: where Rahu hungers for the world, Ketu detaches from it. It is the great significator of spirituality, letting go, and past-life karma.

What Ketu signifies

• Detachment and dissolution — releasing attachments, endings, renunciation.
• Spirituality and moksha (liberation) — the inward, liberating pull of the psyche.

How Ketu behaves

• It sits exactly opposite Rahu (180°) and is always retrograde; together they form the Kaal Sarp axis (Kaal Sarp Dosha).
• It owns no sign; traditions place its exaltation in Scorpio and debilitation in Taurus (the reverse of Rahu), and it is often said to behave like Mars.
• Its Vimshottari dasha runs 7 years — shorter and often more inward-turning than Rahu’s.

The Rahu–Ketu axis

Rahu and Ketu are best read together as a single karmic axis: Rahu marks the direction of growth and craving in this life; Ketu marks what the soul has already mastered and is ready to release. The house Ketu occupies often shows an area where you feel detached, instinctively skilled, or inclined to withdraw — and where the lessons are about non-attachment rather than acquisition.

Is Ketu malefic?

Ketu is a natural malefic for worldly matters — it can dissolve, separate, and bring sudden endings in the affairs of its house. But it is also the planet of wisdom, discrimination, and spiritual progress. A well-placed Ketu gives sharp intuition, research and healing ability, and a genuine inner life. The point is not to fear it but to understand which attachments it is asking you to loosen.
